India’s coronavirus tally rose to 1,03,74,932 in the last 24 hours with 18,088 new COVID-19 cases, government data shows.
Total Covid-related deaths touched 1.5 lakh with 264 deaths over the past day when at least 21,314 people recovered from the disease. With this, active cases have come down to 2,27,546 – around 2 per cent of the total caseload – as recoveries neared the one-crore mark.
The new infections were detected on the basis of 9,31,408 samples tested on Tuesday.
As per a recent government order, 5 per cent total samples are to be sent to INSACOG – a 10-lab consortium conducting genome sequencing to check for coronavirus mutation within the country.
The practice was started after UK announced it had detected a more viral strain of the COVID-19 virus, which has put the country under lockdown with record new cases.
India has 58 cases of the UK Covid strain – all among international travellers, primarily UK returnees, and their primary contacts. They are in institutional quarantine.
